Kaonix Are applicants turned off by your website? | Date: 23/11/2007 |

Recruiters are losing potential applicants through the poor quality of their website, according to a poll by Ipsos MORI. Karen Wisdom, associate director of employer relationship management, explains: "They may be reflecting the company brand, but they are not giving people the information they need in relation to the role, or about working for the company in general."

She said other problem applicants came across were sites that were hard to navigate, or didn't contain the information they needed to apply successfully. The survey highlighted that this was particularly important for recruiters hoping to attract younger applicants, because 68% of those under the age of 30 use internet sites to research for job applications.

She added that this group were the most likely to be put off by something they came across online, with 29% of respondents under 30 saying they had decided against making an application by something they had heard or read about a company.

Kaonix Job-seeking Brits costing UK businesses £7 BILLION in lost wages | Date: 20/11/2007 |

Job-seeking Brits are costing UK businesses £7 BILLION in lost wages every year, according to new research. More than half of Brits admit using work time to search for a new job - spending an average of 45 minutes scouring ads each week.

One in three people has used the telephone on their desk to enquire about new jobs and half of those polled said they used their office computer to search employment websites. One in five said they had filled out application forms while sitting at their desks. The study also found 31 per cent use their office telephone for their job search and one in five even fill out application forms while at their desk.

30 per cent say the main reason for job hunting under the boss' nose is boredom, more than a quarter turn to the job ads because they get so annoyed while at work. It doesn't stop with job hunting either as 12 per cent of workers have pulled a sickie to get time off for an interview while another 17 per cent have pretended to have a doctors or dentist appointment. Eight per cent of these cheeky Brits have been caught out by their boss though with five per cent getting a warning and seven per cent even sacked because of it.

The lying doesn't end there though as a quarter of the 4,000 Brits polled admit to lying when applying for a new job.

  • Almost 12 per cent lie about their current responsibilities and ten per cent stretch the truth about their salary.
  • Another 11 per cent have also made up reasons for leaving previous roles.

The poll also found that the average Brit will apply for 19 roles, go on 12 interviews and have nine different jobs in their lifetimes.

Kaonix It's official - hairdressers are the UK's happiest workers | Date: 17/10/2007 |

When it comes to happiness at work, hairdressers are a cut above the rest - according to this year's City & Guilds' 'Happiness Index.' On the other hand, secretaries/PAs/admin workers like their jobs the least. And if you live in Newcastle, you're certainly smiling: 19 per cent of people there gave their jobs top marks.

The saying 'Money can't buy you happiness' certainly seems true. Almost a third of people in the £10 - £15k bracket rated their job 10/10, while less than 5 per cent of workers earning £40 - £45k gave their jobs a 10.

Chris Humphries, director general of City & Guilds, comments, "It may come as a surprise to some that financial reward doesn't always mean a happier working environment or employee."

So what factors do make us whistle while we work? 19 per cent of us would like to do something worthwhile and almost 15 per cent just want a more flexible workday. Humphries found, "Some of the happiest workers are those who feel they have a lot of opportunities for professional development."

Here, then, are the UK's 20 happiest jobs to work in, according to City & Guilds:

Hairdresser
Average happiness rating: 8.7

Beauty Therapist
Average happiness rating: 8

Early Years/Childcare
Average happiness rating: 7.8

Doctor/Dentist
Average happiness rating: 7.5

Human Resources
Average happiness rating: 6.5

Banking/Insurance/Finance
Average happiness rating: 6.4

Catering
Average happiness rating: 6.3

Does your job rank high in this list? Chris Humphries concludes, "Nowadays true job satisfaction and happiness is about fulfilling your full potential, tapping into your own creativity, and feeling that you can make a difference."

Kaonix Employer brands damaged by online ignorance | Date: 17/10/2007 |

The Internet is the first port of call for jobseekers, yet employers are still damaging their employer brand when it comes to dealing with online applications.

According to the latest Total Forum report - a comprehensive study of jobseeker trends - 80 per cent of jobseekers look online before anywhere else, compared to 66 per cent in 2005. Regional newspapers follow, with 52 per cent using this source.

The volume of online applications is also rising. More than half of those polled (56 per cent) had applied for a job online, whilst 36 per cent had applied for 1 - 5 jobs within the last month (a 4 per cent increase from 32 per cent in 2005).

Yet despite this high level of online activity, it appears that the majority of recruiters are damaging their employer brand by failing to have the courtesy to respond to applicants. A staggering 73 per cent of those polled did not receive a response or acknowledgement from employers after applying for a job.

The Total Forum report also gives insights into exactly who is using the Internet to find work in 2007, revealing an increasing trend towards more experienced and professional jobseekers using the Internet. Forty per cent of online jobseekers are now at managerial level or above, an increase of 5 per cent since the last report. More than a third (37 per cent) have a degree or postgraduate qualification.

The report also shows that for the first time ever, women have overtaken men as the primary users of online job hunting - 52 per cent are female, compared with 48 per cent in 2005. However, the key roles that women search for remain more traditional with the retail, secretarial/PA and healthcare sectors being the most popular. The hottest sectors for male jobseekers are IT, engineering and manufacturing, and transport and logistics.

Kaonix UK plc be very afraid! | Date: 25/09/2007 | VISIT WEBSITE

Employees are being asked to blow the whistle on their own company's recruitment failings in a bid to address the resourcing crisis damaging Britain's economy.

The campaign, run through a blogging site, forthewantofanail.org, is the brainchild of Peter Schofield, a business consultant and expert in organisational hiring practice, who has witnessed the effects of this first-hand over the past 20 years.

The 2007 national management survey revealed that 81% of employers were reporting recruitment problems, with many forced to offer huge signing-on bonuses or golden hellos.

Kaonix Mickey Mouse applicant tracking | Date: 10/09/2007 |

Don Firth, CEO of AllRetailJobs.com, recently carried out a survey of 60,000 applicants his job board had put forward to clients. He found that 83% of them had been wrongly tracked. He described the process of tracking applicants by asking them to select from a drop down menu as a "Mickey Mouse method of tracking valuable source-of-hire information."

At last, this issue that we have known all along is finally being taken seriously.

Fortunately web-cruit has always automatically tracked the source of all applications!

Kaonix ICO launches data protection crackdown on recruitment agencies | Date: 26/06/2007 | VISIT WEBSITE

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is today urging recruitment agencies to meet their obligations under the Data Protection Act. Under the Act, most organisations that process individuals' personal information electronically must notify with the ICO. Failure to notify with the ICO can result in prosecution and fines. Recently, the ICO has successfully prosecuted a number of organisations for failing to notify. These included a recruitment company which had to pay a £2000 fine.

The ICO is concerned that its records indicate that approximately 50% of recruitment and employment agencies have not notified the ICO are therefore not currently registered as data controllers. Any that have not done so should notify the ICO immediately. The ICO will begin taking further action against those that have failed to notify.

Chief Operating Officer at the ICO, Simon Entwisle, said: "Notification is an important legal requirement under the Data Protection Act. Compliance with data protection principles ensures that individuals' personal information is secure, accurate, up-to-date and processed fairly. Failure to notify is a serious offence and the ICO will not hesitate to take action against those organisations that flout the law in this way".

Notification costs £35 per annum and should be made directly to the Information Commissioner's Office, based in Wilmslow. Registering is easy and takes only a few minutes on the ICO website.

If you need more information, please contact the Information Commissioner's press office on 020 7025 7580 or visit the website at: www.ico.gov.uk
